Abstract
Particle pollution includes “inhalable coarse particles”, with diameter lager than 2.5 μm and smaller than 10 μm and “fine particles”, with diameters of 2.5 μm and smaller (PM 2.5 or particulate matter <2.5μm). Exposure to these particles can cause serious health problems, including premature mortality and higher instances of respiratory illness. The aim of this project has been to set up a monitoring campaign to assess the release of these pollutants in proximity to the urban waste incineration plant in Bolzano. More specifically, it has focused on dioxins, IPA, PM10, PM2.5, PM1 and ultra-fine particles. The measurement results pointed out that the waste incineration plant of Bolzano is not a considerable source of dioxins, PAH’s, fine and ultra fine particles. On the other hand, it was found that the amount of contaminants in the ambient air of Bolzano and Merano can be directly correlated to domestic heating and road traffic.
